HAIR TREATMENT IN KOREA

Introduction

Getting a hair transplant in Korea is considered as a very well developed and popular procedure. Not only in Koreans, but men and women all over the world experience hair loss due to a variety of reasons. People’s self-esteem can decrease as their hair gets thinner because hair is part of a person’s identity. Doctors usually recommend either medication or surgery for hair loss as a form of a solution.

Korea is a global pioneer in hair restoration surgery, hair transplantation, and hair treatment.

The rapid expansion of Korea brought many innovations into the medical field, including hair treatment procedures. Being a nation that is deeply concerned with aesthetics, Korea pioneered the groundbreaking technique of hair follicle transplantation, which is used globally nowadays.

The Korean Hair Restoration Society (KSHRS) has researched and experimented for many years. The society is ever-growing, and more and more skilled surgeons are joining the organization. Some examples of their work include operational recommendations for different hair groups, which Korean surgeons use to ensure the best hair treatment outcomes. These guidelines include the adaptation of hair shape, hair follicle extraction methods, and medicinal treatment to improve the effect.

Other examples include the ARTAS, a robotic hair transplantation system that was first unveiled in 2016 by the Korean hospital. The robot detects and selects suitable hair follicles for transplantation using an algorithm. The most recent discovery of a Korean hair transplant is an allogeneic hair transplant. It is a process that helps hair loss patients to obtain hair from others without taking an immunosuppressant.

Hair Transplant Surgery

According to the International Society for Esthetic Plastic Surgery and Medical Science, as the world leader in plastic surgery, hair transplant in Korea is the most effective way to treat hair loss. With a success rate of 98%, you will get the best natural-looking hair treatment in Korea.

The result has two separate surgical methods, which we will discuss further down. The appropriate way will be decided after a thorough examination from the surgeon.

  • Local Anesthesia
  • 4 ~ 8 Hours of surgery time
  • 2 ~ 7 Days of recovery time to return to a regular daily routine
  • Permanent result

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

FUE or non-incisional hair transplantation surgery does not require any skin removal. The procedure involves making a small (0.8 mm-1.0 mm) circular instrument, or a punch to create a tiny, round incision in the skin, isolating it from the surrounding tissue. The device is then removed (pulled) straight from the scalp, leaving a small open hole.

Patients and Korean surgeons often both favor the FUE technique because it is minimally invasive. Scarring is minimal and almost invisible. This technique is preferred for patients with shorter hairstyles and people looking for a less invasive treatment.

FUE or non-invasive hair transplant technology in Korea is highly developed to precisely monitor and remove hair follicles. The process is repeated until enough follicular units have been obtained by the hair transplant surgeon for the planned hair restoration procedure.

The whole surgery can take from 4 hours up to 8 hours and rarely can be scheduled for two consecutive days in long transplant sessions. The holes in the donor area are around 1 mm in size, They heal fully within 7 to 10 days, leaving tiny white scars concealed behind and on the scalp’s sides.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)

FUT or incisional hair transplantation surgery is a procedure where the hair is transplanted to the bald or balding areas of the scalp from the region in the back, and sides of the scalp where the hair is less likely to thin. FUT hair transplantation surgery is done by using groups of 1 to 4 strands that occur naturally, called follicular units.

Following anesthetization of the patient’s scalp, the doctor extracts a strip of tissue from the donor region, a region inside the permanent zone. The donor strip is divided into several different follicular units using microscopic dissection techniques, once removed. The doctor makes small holes in the scalp as these follicular unit grafts are prepared, called recipient places, where the grafts are placed.

The layout and positioning of these follicular unit grafts determine the cosmetic consistency of the hair transplantation. This layout has to be determined on a case-by-case basis, depending on the history of hair loss and the probability of future hair loss. Since follicular unit hair transplants mimic the way hair is growing in nature, the results should look entirely natural in expert hands and will be impossible to distinguish from one’s original hair.

Natural hair growth is expected to begin after 3 ~ 4 months. This hair treatment approach results in beautiful hair with a natural look. It also has the advantage of being more accurate on the transplanted hair. This type of hair restoration surgery in Korea is recommended for patients with longer hair.

The recovery time for FUT is longer than the process used for FUE.

Conclusion

The most significant distinction between Follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is how hair follicles in the back and sides of the scalp are extracted from the donor region. The rest of the hair transplant process is the same.

All hair restoration surgeries in Korea require impressive medical skills, but they also need an artistic mind. The surgeon must pay attention to the length, depth, and location of the grafting and must also be sensitive to the patient’s posture, face, skull form, and overall appearance. It also extends to all types of treatment.
